Research | March 24, 2015

There are a million ways to give back to the world around you from donating to volunteering or helping a friend move a couch. Did you know that how you choose to give back says a lot about you and your personality?

Take our infographic quiz  to learn more about your giving style — and ways to give back that fit your type.

Why We Give Back

Now that you know how you like to give, let’s take a closer look at the “why” behind our charitable actions. The simple answer to why we give is: Because it feels good, both for the recipient and for the giver.

In fact, there’s plenty of research out there confirming that giving back is not just good for our planet, but makes us happier, healthier beings. Here are some facts about the science of giving that might surprise you:

  • Giving to charity produces the same effect in the brain as eating chocolate or going for a run. A recent study on charitable giving showed that when people donated to a cause they cared about, the midbrain region of the brain lit up — which is the area in charge of pleasure and rewards.
  • Volunteering makes people happy.  People who volunteer have lower levels of depression, increased life satisfaction, and a more positive well-being than those who do not do volunteer work. Source: University of Exeter
  • You don’t have to be an adult to experience the power of giving. Children who perform acts of kindness report being happier and feeling more accepted by their peers. Source: University of British Columbia

If you want to experience that “happy brain glow” (aka that warm, fuzzy feeling you get from giving to others) make a small donation to one of over 4,140 charities in Canada.
