Bullying is a major problem that affects both children and adults around the world, every single day. Whether it is experienced in school, the workplace or online, bullying can have a negative impact on both mental health, and overall well being.
What is Pink Shirt Day?
Pink Shirt Day aims to raise awareness around bullying, as well as to raise funds to support programs that foster healthy self-esteem in children.
The idea for Pink Shirt Day stemmed from an act of bullying back in 2007. A Grade 9 student at Central Kings Rural High School in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. Like most bullying incidents, this could have easily gone unnoticed. But, in this case, two students saw the incident and decided to take a stand. They encouraged their school to wear pink in solidarity with the bullying victim. The movement quickly spread to neighbouring schools, and eventually, across the world!
Pink Shirt Day is now celebrated in more than 25 countries worldwide. Here in British Columbia, it is celebrated this year on the 27th February.
How can I get involved?
In total, British Columbia has raised over $2.1 million through celebrating Pink Shirt Day in the past. This has gone towards anti-bullying initiatives in BC that directly support youth in need. If you’d like to get involved for this years Pink Shirt Day, there are a number of ways in which you can do so!
- Buy a t-shirt or a pin: money made from the sale of Pink Shirt Day t-shirts and pins goes directly to the cause.
- Get social: Take a stand against bullying online by sharing your Pink Shirt Day pictures with the hashtag #PinkShirtDay. Also, for each use of the hashtag #PinkItForward in the month of February, Coast Capital will donate $1 to Pink Shirt Day.
- Donate: If you can’t wear pink, no problem! You can still support the cause by making a donation to the campaign.
- Fundraise: Start a Giving Group to join together with your friends, family and colleagues to raise money for the campaign. Here at Charitable Impact, we are doing a pink waffle morning! In exchange for a pink waffle, team members are donating $5 into a Giving Group to raise money for the cause.
