Many see the act of jumping as just that – an action propelled by our feet to push us into the air. We may jump because of sport, exercise, or a good photo op.

But for some, this action takes on a whole different meaning.

The Jump for Joy Photography Project is a multifaceted art project created by Vancouver-based artist and photographer, Eyoälha Baker.

This project consists of many different elements. In a nutshell, it is a series of photos that showcase individuals of all backgrounds, communities, and diversities, jumping for joy.

You can see some of her work in a mural at the corner of Pender Street and Abbott Street in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (EDIT: The Jump for Joy Photo Mural has been removed since the publication of this article. However, we believe that its concept will be immortalized through other pieces of Eyoälha’s work). Her vision for this project also includes creating an art book, showcasing 1,000 individuals and their Jump for Joy photos, as well as photography exhibits that present some of the best Jump for Joy snapshots.

The portraits themselves are stunning. However, what makes this art project particularly unique is the deep connection that Baker makes with individuals in the photo. These individuals have diverse stories to tell: They are changemakers who encourage positivity within others, the community, and the world.

What if I just started sharing images that were all about celebrating life?

In a world filled with news of disasters and conflict, the Jump for Joy Photography Project serves as a perfect yet simple reminder that positivity and change can be found in the most unassuming of places.

We are so humbled to partner with Eyoälha and the Jump for Joy Photo Project at one of the biggest summer events in Vancouver: the West 4th Avenue Khatsahlano Street Party on July 9th, from 11AM to 4PM. If you are in the Vancouver area, make sure to stop by our Jump for Joy photo booth!

Don’t forget to also say hi to our Chimp Team Members as we’ll be giving away some cool swag and $10 to donate to any charity of your choice!
