The world’s on the brink of one of the worst famines in modern history, with 20 million people at risk of starvation in the Horn of Africa – 10 million of which are children. South Sudan, Somalia, Yemen and Nigeria are all at risk of disaster, and it doesn’t really seem like the world has woken up to this unfolding crisis yet. Across Somalia alone, 70 percent of farm animals have already died.

The risk of four famines at once is unprecedented, and it will require a huge amount of global goodwill and leadership to help prevent this looming disaster. And that’s why the Canadian government has just stepped up in a big way, and has just given Canadians the opportunity to show up and help with one of the most acute issues of our lifetimes.

The federal government will match donations by Canadians to registered charities who are helping with famine relief between March 17 and June 30. All donations made by individuals to relevant charities through CHIMP qualify (just include a note on your donation: “FOR FAMINE RELIEF FUND”). So whether it’s $20 or $50 or $200, any amount counts and will be doubled through this campaign, making your donation go even further towards saving lives most in need.

Below is a list of Canadian humanitarian charities recommended by the Canadian Government to give to and that will be matched:

Action Against Hunger

Adventist Development And Relief Agency

Canadian Foodgrains Bank

Canadian Lutheran World Relief

Canadian Red Cross Society

CARE Canada

Islamic Relief Canada

Oxfam Canada

Plan International Canada

Samaritan’s Purse Canada

Save The Children Canada

SOS Children’s Villages Canada

UNICEF Canada

World Relief Canada

World Vision Canada

*Note that this is not a complete list of all registered charities that qualify for matching. See the Canadian government’s website for further instructions.
